Not trying to get into the political divide or the ongoing illegal migrants' crackdown in the US, but earlier in May, the Texas-based rock band Lord Buffalo had to cancel its European tour after its drummer, Yamal Said, a US green card holder, was detained by US Customs and Border Protection. What does this imply for African artists?
Though the number of African musicians who have toured the US this year is difficult to determine, the American market has become increasingly important for African artists. In recent years, as reported by Topcharts and various music industry publications, Nigerian artists Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, and Tiwa Savage have achieved remarkable success in the United States.
The momentum has continued through 2024 and into 2025, with several notable African artists completing successful US tours: Ghanaian artist Amaarae brought her "Fountain Baby Tour" to multiple cities with sold-out shows; South African DJ Black Coffee maintained his Las Vegas residency while headlining several electronic music festivals across the US; Congolese artist Fally Ipupa introduced Congolese rumba to diaspora communities; and Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie toured with his "Jamz World Tour" and several other venues.
This surge of African artists touring the US marks just the beginning of greater opportunities. However, the recent incident with Lord Buffalo's drummer raises important questions about the stability of these prospects.
The detention of Yamal Said, despite his legal green card status, reflects a concerning trend that could affect African musicians planning US tours. While this incident alone doesn't necessarily indicate systematic targeting of musicians, it highlights several challenges: increased scrutiny by border officials, unpredictability of last-minute visa issues or detention, and varying impacts based on country of origin.
Rather than entirely abandoning the lucrative US market or proceeding with business as usual, African artists should consider multipronged approaches:
Diversify touring strategies by exploring emerging markets
Embrace digital-first approaches using platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram
Strengthen legal preparation with specialized immigration attorneys well before planned tours
Schedule performances strategically around major events like BET Awards, SXSW, or Afropunk Festival
Partner with American artists for collaborative projects to facilitate smoother entry
As the African music industry continues to gain global influence, while US immigration challenges present obstacles, African artists must innovate on how to connect with international audiences. The question isn't whether to engage with or disengage from the US market, but how do we do so in ways that minimize risk while maximizing opportunity during this uncertain period?
